Chris Duffy (Humor)

Tom, we haven't had too many podcasts where you're interviewing a fellow podcast host, and Chris is a special version of that.

So I'm curious, going into the conversation, was there anything special you did to get ready for that kind of a conversation?

You know, we have a lot of common interests and actually some common guests on our show.

But I think where we diverge is no one would confuse me with a comedian.

I have fun, but I'm not cracking jokes.

And Chris does.

He's great.

He makes people laugh and is delightful.

I think I had thought of humor before as a nice to have.

And some people are funny.

Some people are not.

Chris helped me see that humor isn't just about being funny.

that humor is a posture and a way of looking at the world in which you can be open to the weirdness, the absurdity, the surprise, to take notice of that to yourself and to convey it to others.

And it brings a certain levity in any situation, whether it's the most grave situation or the most festive.

There's humor to be found if you look for it.

It

sounds like humor, the way he talks about it, is a way of perceiving things.

That's right.

He distinguishes between humor, comedy, laughter.

He's a comedian.

Comedy is an art.

It's a skill.

For some people, it's even a profession.

Humor is a way of interacting with the world, to see humor in things.

Some people can be humorous, but really, I think it's a way of interacting with the world and interacting with people that just brings much-needed joy.
