If you're the average person on the street or even an average person sitting in the pew, the doctrine of who is the Holy Spirit or to define the Holy Spirit, you may get a wide variety of
answers as to who that is.
John MacArthur said, there is no more maligned, no more misunderstood, no more misrepresented, no more insulted, no more dishonored, and no more blaspheme member of the Trinity in our contemporary church culture than the Holy Spirit.
Pervasive errors that persist in the contemporary church are, you look to your handouts, Number one is attributing to the Holy Spirit words that He didn't say, deeds that He didn't do, and experiences that He did not produce.
That's the first issue.
And there are many issues, but these are the primary two.
And then secondarily, teaching The Holy Spirit as an impersonal force, mystical energy, or an abstract influence rather than a distinct person who is fully and co-eternally God.
One commentator observed that the Holy Spirit is regularly subjected to horrific degradation in modern pop theology and certain extreme movements.
He is often treated as an electrification current of ecstatic energy, a cosmic genie who grants wishes or a mystical force that causes chaotic behavior.
For example, we have endless human experiences, emotional experiences, bizarre experiences, demonic experiences, all said to come from the Holy Spirit.
Visions, revelations, voices from heaven, dreams, speaking in tongues, prophecies, out-of-body experiences, trips to heaven, anointings, and miracles.
You remember Matthew 12 and verse 31, the leaders of the Pharisees, remember they committed the unpardonable sin.
Anyone remember what that unpardonable sin was? And how did that occur? You remember? You remember? attributing to Satan things that the Holy Spirit did.
Remember? They knew the claims of Jesus were true, but they attributed His works, the works of the Holy Spirit, to Satan.
Today we're experiencing more of the opposite, aren't we? Where the works of Satan are being attributed to the Holy Spirit.
These kinds of works include things like deception, false miracles, bad theology, lying visions, lying dreams, lying revelations, deceptive teachers who are only in it for the money and for the power and for the influence.
So just as attributing to Satan the works of the Holy Spirit is blasphemy, so is the reverse, attributing to the Holy Spirit the work of Satan.
