MSI 2026 has a big problem holding it back from being a truly excellent League of Legends esports tournament. Into the AM: Pick up our new collaboration t-shirt and shop the Fourth of July Sale…
Like, I, I told people as soon as I saw that format, like, wait a minute, the main event itself.
'Cause remember, they even did what I think is actually an example of unlike what, uh, Riot normally does of, like, breaching the premise to make the actual real world result better.
So I'll give you a quick, uh, side angle on this.
Right, when I was a boy, Yamato, many eons ago, there was a competition.
It wasn't called the UEFA Champions League.
That only ha- started in the '90s.
And the whole point, by the way, of why they rebranded to the Champions League is because the European Cup was for the champion of each region.
And the whole premise was you only got to play in what was then rebranded the Champions League if you won your league.
Well, what that meant, I'll give you an example, is I was a Liverpool fan, right? Here's what's mad.
I've seen Liverpool win the Champions League twice in my lifetime, but do you know that the two times they won, they weren't the champion of the Premier League? And so in the old system of the Ch- Champions League, in the European Cup, they never would've even been able to qualify, bro.
In fact, I used to sit for the whole '90s and watch basically Manchester United, and then, then obviously Arsenal at some point, just play in that competition and go, "Wish I could see my team play in that." But I get it.
We're not the champions.
Now the point I'm making here is this: as has been pointed out by people, actually like legendary footballers like Ruud Gullit, in theory that is a better competition.
If you can only get access to the Champions League by being the champion, it does in theory make it more prestigious to win it.
It's just that anyone who's ever watched the competition knows the competition in real, like, reality, e- even though the concept sounds amazing and pure, it's actually better if you make it a little bit impure and let, like, two or three teams from the top leagues in.
And then if someone has, like, an inspired run, like Liverpool in 20- 2005, et cetera, that can be kinda cool as well, right? That it's not just, like, one...
'Cause also, a bit like MSI, you can see why they did this, the real problem with having one champion from each region is I can tell you that's why you used to have some crazy ones that were won back in the day by, like, who the fuck? Like Red Star Belgrade or someone wouldn't won one time.
'Cause in reality you can only have one Italian team.
So if it's Italy's the best league, you can still only have one, so you've only really got to beat one o-...
I'll have someone else pick one.
You only get one from the Premier League, you only get one from German Bundesliga or whatever.
So anyway, the point is, I get why they did this approach when they made it like multiple teams for MSI.
I think that part also makes it dope.
Then it got the double elim.
