True Greatness

So the desire to become great, here's where it begins.

It begins with glory that's requested, right? This is the first couple verses here.

Again, it's the mom of Zebedee's sons.

This is James and John.

They're known as the sons of thunder.

Lot of zeal, lot of passion.

Again, they've just heard Jesus talk about this promised reward that's coming for those that give up their stuff here and follow him.

that the 12 disciples will judge Israel, or the disciples will judge the 12 tribes of Israel.

This is what he's just promised them, these positions of authority in the kingdom of heaven.

There's reward coming that many who are first will be last, and the last first, and the disciples are like, oh, that's us.

We're the last.

We're going to be first.

We're fishermen and tax collectors.

We're not impressive.

We're going to be first.

This is amazing.

We're going to have these positions.

This is great, but for the sons of Zebedee, it wasn't enough.

They didn't just want to be first.

They wanted to be first first.

They didn't just want to judge the 12 tribes of Israel.

They wanted to know, Jesus, can we sit on each side of your throne? And I don't know why, but they weren't the ones that came to ask.

I don't know if it was their mom's idea.

I don't know if it was their idea, and they were just too nervous to ask Jesus regardless.

She comes and kneels before Jesus.
