As we begin, let me kinda define our terms.
Pride isn't confidence.
Pride isn't having a big personality or being bold or courageous.
It's not enjoying the fruits of your labor or a job well done.
It's not taking pride in your work.
Scripture actually commends diligence and excellence, um, and we reap what we sow, right? So it's, it- it's not that.
Pride, in the biblical sense, is the disordered love of your own excellence, the disordered love of your own excellence.
St. Augustine called it amor sui, the love of self, set in opposition to amor Dei, which is the love of God.
So every heart, every single person, every single man, every heart is being organized and structured around one of those two loves.
There is no third option.
Either the love of God is directing me and my whole life is gonna be centered around Him, or it's gonna be the love of self.
And here's what's kind of fascinating.
When you study those words, the same words get used for God's legitimate glory, His majesty.
Pride is a creature trying to occupy an altitude that was never meant to be his.
And there's a harder word, zadon, which means insolence, presumption, the arrogance of the scoffer.
Proverbs 21:24 says, "Scoffer is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts in arrogant pride." So here's the working definition for today: pride is the refusal to be merely a creature.
It's the heart saying, in a thousand small ways, "I will be the standard.
I will be the measure of all things.
I will be the judge.
I will be the source.
