The Watchlist

Now, I know I speak for many when I say I cannot contain my excitement about the return of The Diplomat.

Woohoo! Yay! I'm planning a day with no interruptions and watching it back to back.

Grainne, remind us of the

world it's set in.

It's a fascinating world.

It's like Scandal meets West Wing.

It's basically a married couple who are career diplomats.

This is season four.

At the end of season three, he was now the vice president to Alison Janney, who was the president of the United States.

And Kerry Russell was playing the US ambassador to the UK with Rory Kinnear as an amazing UK prime minister.

And we have to include Bradley Whitford, who plays Alison Janney's first gentleman.

It is a fantastic quartet.

Of just intrigue and scheming.

Marriage.

It's marriage counselling.

It's also about one getting ahead of the other.

And can you control your ambition and jealousy at how somebody else's star has ascended when yours may have fallen? And

then two minutes later, Russia's dropped a nuclear submarine off the coast of England in chaos and consternation.

And they have to sort that as well as sort their own lives and their own relationships.

You come

to the geopolitics and you stay for just the absolute politics of their marriage.

I found out, and I have seen a lot of these, the new season, season four, I found that they've hit a better balance between the marriage counselling stuff and the geopolitical stuff.

And this is a show after four seasons that still has the power to surprise us.

It's still a bit too talkative for me.

There's far too many long dialogues.
