ROMANTASY ROUNDTABLE: THE FIRST STONE — ARC REVIEW We got our hands on an early ARC of The First Stone by Robert Biehn, and folks… WE HAVE THOUGHTS. And by thoughts, we mean Rick is giving this one…
Uh, in The First Stone by Robbie B., Robert B., uh, the world has been devastated by catastrophe, and survival is a daily battle.
Uh, we have two siblings, Kasimir, um, Kas, and Evelyn, Eve, and they've spent years navigating the ruins, relying on each other while avoiding, uh, the powerful voice, forces that have been hunting them.
Uh, when Eve becomes dangerously ill right in the beginning, um, Kas risks everything to find her medicine.
Uh, they struggle, and their struggles reveal, um, that there are mysterious markings that they have on their body, they have missing memories, uh, and their unusual abilities, uh, may connect them to something much larger than either of them understand.
Uh, real quick, when Rob, uh, when Robert emailed me, he said, "Think Avatar meets..." Um, help, Kim.
Thinks Avatar meets Mistborn, and those words hit real hard and, uh, it's actually really true.
Um, so as the story expands beyond the wastelands into a world of elemental magic, political control, political control, training, there's pr- prophecy in there.
Uh, both of them face questions about who they are, what they can do, and what their past means for their future.
Uh, The First Stone blends post-apocalyptic survival with epic fantasy, layer, a layered magic system, dangerous adversaries, and a deeply personal story about family, identity, and the lengths [lips smack] someone will go through to protect the person they love.
And yeah, that's, that's a great summary of what the book is about.
Um, don't wanna talk about any spoilers, but-
[laughs]
... yeah, that's it.
That's...
It's, it's hard not to, [laughs] but that's, you know?
I know.
It really is because, and particularly, you know, for our long-term listeners or short-term listeners-
Yeah
... um, you know that we love a deep dive into a book and to get into all the, the nitty-gritty of it.
Um, and so it's, like, hard not to be like, "Oh, and this happened-
Right
... and this happened." That is, like, so our MO usually.
Um, but that was a really good high, arching summary.
