I think it's easy for him to be a favorite because he's the strongest character out of all of them.
Aveline as a character was interesting to discuss and interact with, even though I didn't like her half the time.
But for me, Varric is bar none the best character in the game as far as companions go.

You know, I like romance just like as much as the next person, but I think having friendships that are just friendships are great and make sense, and I'm grateful for them.
And I think Varric is, I mean, the strongest in the Dragon Age series for sure, and the strongest in this game, especially because you can't romance him at all.
