You know, you sit there and you're thinking, I know who she reminds me of, even down to the era and the determination to solve this mystery.

She's Franny Fisher.

It's so funny because I didn't think of the Miss Fisher books or series at all while I was writing it.

But now you say this, I'm like, oh yeah, you're totally right.

And so it's really hard, I think, when you love a series to try to decide which book you're going to put in there.

So, for example, I really like the Franny Fisher series of detective novels by...

Kerry Greenwood.

But when you've read 14 of them, which one? Do you go for the first one? Do you go for your favourite one? Do you go halfway through? And there's a lot of writers, I mean, like Peter Goldsworthy or Helen Garner or Tim Winton, where people are going to be voting for multiple books and we don't quite know what's going to end up in the final 100.

Yeah, these are people with lives and jobs who are spending their own money in most parts and getting their hair and makeup done.

The other thing too was that I looked at the dress that Nila wore and went, oh, my God, it's Franny Fisher.

It's fabulous.
