I think about recently playing and loving the fucking shit out of, it's not The Mermaid's Tale, I never remember what it's called.

It's the sequel to Tangled Tower, which is a visual novel mystery game.

that is just like oozing with charm and the way that the mystery comes together and why people are doing what and suspicions and fake outs.

Like I ate the fuck out of that thing.

but we can say that um as an animator you worked on mermaid mask and tangle tower we had adam as a guest last episode um how's that experience been

I very much enjoyed working with Adam on Tangled Tower and Mermaid Mask specifically.

Honestly, two of the best projects I've worked on.

What was this character doing? What was this character doing? Why is she shifty? What is he up to? How does it all tie together? Um, and yeah, it's really good.

Um, out of Tangled Tower and

this, this is definitely the better game.

Um, I, I ended up, like, replaying Tangle Tower before it came out 'cause I had played it with my daughter, but I hadn't played it with my wife.

So I played it with my wife, and the ending of Tangle Tower is bad.

It's like, it's a game that is great, great, great, great, and then the last, like, half-hour is like, "What just happened?" And it was kinda frustrating.

But by all accounts, the ending of Mermaid Mask is supposed to be very good, and it's just, like, it's my type of writing that I really like, where it's, like, really funny, charismatic characters who are succinct, that, you know, there's not, like, too much talking.

Um, and yeah, I really like those characters as well.

I was convinced that people would basically like it less than the previous game, which was called Tangle Tower, which did pretty well.

Mm-hmm.

And the whole time I was making The Mermaid Mask, I was like, "People are gonna say that this game is technically better, but they, less than the sum of its parts.

Like, it'll come across less charming." Mm.

Um, because I kinda felt like we got lucky with Tangle Tower and the characters are just really lovable.

But no, the characters in Mermaid Mask, uh, my metric is, is what they're doing on Tumblr, and you would not believe- [laughs] ... what they're doing on Tumblr.

Maybe you would, Hamish.

I j- I, I don't wanna say it's a 50/50, but, like, every, for every great family-friendly one, there's also one that is, like, maybe a little bit older.

The ones that I'm, I'm, I'm looking to check out now next are popular mystery-adventures on the Switch and, uh, on the PC, The Te- Tangled Tower, The Mermaid's Curse, all of this sort of stuff.

I think Mermaid's Curse is one of the top-rated video games this year, so I'm looking to, to play that, and it's part of a series of, of sort of mysteries, and I think that, uh...

I bought...

But before we get into more zombie talk when we discuss our game today, Gloomy Eyes, I did wanna mention our previous episode for the game Tangle Tower.

Uh, a game I actually, in a genre that I don't typically vibe with-

... hit quite as hard for you.

At le- at least you had a few issues with it, but I think we had a really good discussion about kind of the pros and cons of Tangle Tower and, and who it might be for.

I enjoyed the offbeat nature of it, so I think that's, uh, where I rank it highly.

I mean, that's how low my standards are for Flash games 'cause it, they don't usually have that kind of stuff.

Um, but yeah, this is one of the most ambitious Flash games, and I literally, uh, speaking as someone who got into SFP games because of the Detective Grimoire series, 'cause I liked Tangle Tower so much, um, I played all of those games.

I came back to this, and I couldn't finish this game.

[laughs] Didn't like it, yeah.

The, the, the hook is, uh...

Well, Adam Vine said this in an interview where he was like, "Every subsequent Detective Grimoire game, I, I tried to have a hook where the question was impossible." So in this case, the hook was that a, a mythical lake monster was being accused of a murder when we don't even know if the monster exists in the first place.

And after this, the games just get increasingly more and more bizarre, to the point where I feel like Tangle Tower just takes place in, like, in ethereal dream world just based on art direction alone.

I find that interesting.
