Alyson and Breht reflect on recent Democratic Socialist electoral victories, the ongoing contradiction between the progressive left and the corporate center within the Democratic Party, the principled…
So we were talking back and forth, and one of the things that we wanted to get into that we're hoping to discuss a little bit is the recent wins for Democratic Socialist candidates and the DSA generally in the electoral sphere.
We've seen some pretty big shifts that are happening right now and internal conflict brewing within the Democratic Party as a result of it that I think is really worth wrestling with, trying to understand what conditions are producing it, what it means for the broader movement, and how we can relate to it.
So obviously, you know, on a very high level, like Zoran winning in New York really set the stage.
But since then, we've seen DSA wins in Los Angeles, more in New York and Colorado.
and really just kind of proof that these democratic socialist politicians are able to challenge, at least in the primaries, well-established and funded, more centrist and, you know, frankly, Zionist Democrats.
And it definitely is something that I think we need to think about and wrestle with what it means for us as socialists who, you know, at least in my case, and I think probably also in Brett's, are willing to be, you know, critical of some of the democratic socialist perspective, but also don't want to just say like, oh, let's paint this with a broad brush and not consider the actual implications and what it means.
And I think we want to be able to understand how all that fits together, how we ought to relate to this.
And yeah, you know, I hope that we'll be able to give what ultimately can be kind of a nuanced perspective that looks at both the limitations, but also, you know, the broader meanings and implications in terms of heightening contradiction and struggle that these races represent.
