Is Your Online Shop Ready For Christmas? What You'll Learn In This Episode Christmas shopping is already underway. Research shows consumers are starting their gift buying earlier each year, with…
So one thing that I think every e-commerce brand should definitely consider is imagine if someone is searching for a Christmas gift and lands on your product listing, what might stop them from clicking buy now? This could obviously be a multitude of things, but it's really important to drill down into what they could be.
I think, you know, as consumers, we certainly expect more than just nice product images.
You know, everyone wants price transparency, detailed product descriptions, dimensions, verified customer reviews, stock availability, things like that.
They are all just expected as a standard nowadays.
So I suppose to ask you first, Gabby, what are maybe some of the most common reasons that you might not make an online purchase today?
Um, God, there's maybe a couple.
Well, one say like just one that comes to mind even say like this, where we like you're talking about like saying, you know, it's outside of product images, I think a big thing for me would be, say, for example, if I was buying say like a makeup product, and it comes in different colors, if they don't include an image where you can see what those say range of colors look like on different skin tones.
you're less likely you know to buy it like I've seen um even recently I was on a website and it was showing different colors but it was showing the color of the say the product in the pan but not actually on you know say like on someone so you can get an idea if it suits you but I think another thing would probably hold me back is say for example if it was a business maybe I hadn't maybe bought from before maybe not really had had seen much visibility from them if i can't get maybe a good idea of you know maybe say for example seeing um say like a video of how that product should be used or something like that that might need it might not mean say that i'm not going to buy the product but it definitely probably would lead me to have a bit more consideration time before kind of you're making that move
absolutely that raises a couple of really good points like I suppose firstly what you said about you know kind of seeing like the product images obviously you can see exactly what something looks like but it can be really helpful to see things like in situ and see things prepared and you might think oh yeah that's the perfect size and then it arrives and it's absolutely tiny because you kind of haven't had a comparison or whatever it might be and then definitely yeah I suppose when we live in an age of so many you know online scams and things like that more than ever people want to verify that as you said if it's a brand you've never purchased from before that number one it's a legitimate business and I think things like obviously customer reviews or you know especially on things like Trustpilot and having that kind of clear online visibility where someone can say OK, well, I saw you posted about listen to Google Merchant Center, you know, but I can't see your website or I haven't seen like associated social media channels like that all definitely has an impact on the kind of trust in your brand as well before they've ever purchased.
Yeah.
And like, say, for example, I think as well, if you can say if brands can show, say, for example, their products and scenario, like I'll give an example, a personal example is I'm not great with measurements.
Never, never been my strong suit.
And I was buying, I think it was last year, I was buying a print for a friend and I just saw the measurements and thought, oh, and just went by, say, like the product photo and thought, oh, that'll be fine.
It arrived.
I thought it was going to be something you could put in a bigger than an A4 frame.
And it probably came out this size.
small so if i think if say if that brand had a comparison of here's what it looks like is a size comparison on sitting on a coffee table or on a wall that would probably have made it a bit of a an easier way but definitely i think we're at that point now where trust you what and it's like you said having building that trust between your website and your other marketing channels is definitely what you need to focus on
Absolutely.
And I suppose there's probably a temptation for, you know, new e-commerce brands to launch ahead of Christmas and think, oh, this is a perfect time to launch a retail brand because this is what people are buying.
But it's like I actually know that that trust takes quite a while to build up.
And if someone can see that you've got, you know, ten followers on Instagram and, you know, low website traffic, it's going to raise red flags.
And it's probably a better idea to actually be prepared for that well in advance.
What about you, Marcus? For you personally, are there some things that would make you immediately decide to abandon cart or comparatively, what would you say gives you the kind of green light when it comes to online purchases?
I would say there's a little bit of variance depending on the type of product that I'm buying.
If I'm getting, you know, a set of headphones, microphones, something like that, for example, a bit of tech, then I'll want to know what's included.
