Certainty in an Uncertain World - Pastor Darryl Williams

**Title:** Certainty in an Uncertain World: What the Bible Says Is Fixed **Summary:** "We might not be in control, but God is." That line sits at the centre of this episode, which goes looking for certainty in an uncertain world. It opens where Luke opens, writing so that his reader might know the certainty of what he had been taught, and then names the things unsettling people now: conflicts that flare up, pause and flare again, the mortgage, the job, health, and the fridge and the washing machine giving out in the same weekend. From there it works through what the Bible presents as fixed. God's word comes first, described as established and trustworthy rather than one more opinion among the billion results a search returns. Then comes first-hand experience. A candid account from Melbourne in 1969 describes turning up argumentative and sceptical, treating baptism as an experiment, and speaking in tongues anyway, then asking God for further proof a couple of days later and getting it. The closing stretch is about hope as an anchor that holds, the assurance that God knows who belongs to him, and the confidence that what has been entrusted to him is safe, ground also covered from another angle in Luke and Theophilus. **Key Points:** - Luke wrote his account so his reader could be certain of what he had been taught, not merely informed about it. - The world offers endless competing opinions, while God's word is described as fixed, established and trustworthy, which makes it something to build on. - Study in 2 Timothy is closer to giving your walk with God a red hot go than swotting for an exam. - Repentance, baptism by immersion and receiving the Holy Spirit follow the pattern of the death, burial and resurrection, and there is no substitute pathway. - A first-hand account of 1969 describes a sceptic who treated baptism as an experiment and spoke in tongues on the spot, then asked for further proof and received it. - Hope is described as an anchor for the soul, something that cannot slip or break under whoever steps out on it. - When the Lord returns, problems are not solved one at a time but settled all at once, so present trouble is not evidence that the promise has failed. - The aim is confidence rather than condemnation, since doubts and misgivings are treated as normal and the Bible keeps reassuring rather than accusing. **Reference Scriptures:** - Luke 1:1-4 - Psalm 111:7-8 - 2 Peter 1:19 - Psalm 19:7 - 2 Timothy 2:15 - John 3:5 - Romans 8:9 - 2 Timothy 2:19 - Hebrews 6:18-20 - Proverbs 11 - 2 Timothy 1:12 - Colossians 2:1-2 excerpt - Hebrews 10:22 **Related Episodes:** - Luke and Theophilus, which opens on the same passage in Luke and works through the same gap between believing and being sure. - The Sure Mercies of David, which shares the Hebrews 6 anchor passage and unpacks what "sure" actually means: a foundation that cannot be moved.
