This is the 73rd episode in my drug pronunciation series. In this episode, I divide hydrochlorothiazide into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, list my sources, and introduce some bonus topics: one pronunciation variation and two abbreviations.
***Why did I pick hydrochlorothiazide for this episode?***
- It is frequently prescribed.
- It's a long, intimidating drug name.
- It is found in combination with other blood pressure medications.
- It's a drug name in my pronunciation course, which ends in December 2026.
There are still more than 50 drug names in the course that have not been part of the pronunciation series. It is my goal to include all 50+ in the drug pronunciation series eventually.
❌ We don't cover pharmacology in this series. Just pronunciations.

Hydrochlorothiazide = HYE-droe-KLOR-oh-THYE-a-zide (7 syllables)
1. HYE, like high blood pressure
2. droe, like a drone
3. KLOR, like chloride
4. oh, like the letter "O" in the alphabet
5. THYE, like the body part, thigh
6. a, which is a short "A" sound, like the "a" in adoption (uh)
7. zide, which rhymes with tide, as in the ocean tide
<!--THE END-->
- Emphasize HYE, KLOR, and THYE. THYE gets the most emphasis.
- Written pronunciation source: MedlinePlus.gov
- Spoken pronunciation example: Tony PharmD HCTZ pronunciation (YouTube)
***Pronunciation Variation***
As an Ohio Pharmacist, I tend to say HYE-droe-KLOR-**uh**-THYE-a-zide instead of HYE-droe-KLOR-**oh**-THYE-a-zide. They sound VERY similar. The difference is "uh" vs "oh." Either spoken pronunciation will pass as correct. They're both "in the ballpark."
***Two abbreviations***
- HCTZ
- HCT
