***Can fear, expectation, & the stories we tell about our bodies actually change what we experience physically?*** Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica famously taught that “our thoughts determine our lives.”…
Because one of the most beloved orthodox books of the last several decades has a fairly provocative title, which is Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives, The Life and Teachings of Elder Thaddeus of Vitavanica.
Which, if somebody put that title on a book today, you'd immediately assume that you'd see a woman on the cover holding some crystals or something.
Because if you hear that phrase through modern ears, it's very easy to take it in one of two terrible directions.
The first is basically that new age spirituality, wherein your thoughts create your reality.
Or if you're sick, you're told that, well, you simply didn't want wellness bad enough.
Right.
Something like that.
But
disease or it's all in their head.
Which sounds scientific until you remember that the head is also part of the body.
Right.
And
that binary doesn't hold up particularly well, even within modern medicine, because the modern system itself has an entire body of research around placebo and nocebo effects, basically around expectation, attention, conditioning, fear, your pain perception, stress physiology, and the way that the meaning we assign to an experience can change the experience
itself.
So if you could please define what nocebo is before somebody thinks we just made up another wellness word here.
That's fair.
