Today's episode is called Seeing Beneath the Surface, the Impact of Neurofilament Light Chain in MS Care.

For the past decade or so, there have been remarkable advances in the utility of blood-based biomarkers for neurological diseases, in particular with neurofilament light chain emerging as a first-in-class blood test, which we can start to use now as a useful marker in MS.

For those of you that are less familiar with neurofilament light chain, this is a protein that's released into the blood when neuronal axons are damaged.

However, in the right context, we can use this as an objective biomarker of injury to see below the surface of disease in multiple sclerosis.

Now, there have already been several excellent episodes of the Moving Science podcast that have looked into much of the science behind the use of neurofilament in MS.

We're going to discuss what neurofilament light chain means in everyday clinical practice, how laboratory advances have made this all possible, how this new biomarker changes conversations that we have between clinicians and patients, and ultimately what this might mean to patients with multiple sclerosis.

So first, Dr. Julie Petrin, who's a researcher and director of impact and evaluation at MS Canada, and a person living with multiple sclerosis.

He's a clinical biochemist and the director of immunology and neurobiomarker lab at the Ottawa Hospital.
