President Trump says he expects a trade deal with Canada very soon, but as Dan Karpenchuk reports, Ottawa says there are no plans to resume talks.

Speaking to journalists on his trip to Ireland Saturday, Trump was optimistic about a trade deal with Canada getting done.

You'll probably see a deal with Canada fairly soon.

His comment came less than a week since Ottawa's retaliatory measures went into effect after he slapped more tariffs on Canada three weeks ago.

He then added new tariffs to take effect Tuesday and even bans on Canadian dairy and alcohol to kick in at the end of September.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney huddled with his cabinet on Friday, planning out Ottawa's next move, but there's been no mention yet of more countermeasures.

His Minister of Canada-US Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, said although he's been in touch with the American side, there are no plans to resume formal talks.

Now in response, Israel has imposed counter-sanctions on the UK, closing its consulate in East Jerusalem, banning entry to elected officials, yet nothing for Canada or France.

Now, this all comes at a time when the Canadian-Israeli relationship remains testy, to say the least, as well as just before an Israeli election in late October and when Ottawa is looking to deepen ties with the European Union.

So what comes next for our relations? Could Canada take it a step further to protect a two-state solution? And should we expect a response from Israel anytime soon? I'm Maria Kastane, and today on The Big Story, I'm talking to Jon Allen, the former Canadian ambassador to Israel, to break down why Canada chose to follow suit with the UK, why now, and what implications the sanctions could have for an already strained Canadian-Israeli relationship.

Jon, welcome back to The Big Story.

Um, it was a similar message, frankly, when these three countries recognized Palestine, uh, last December, where they said that it was largely because they were concerned about the threat to the two-state solution that they thought they had to signal to Israel and to Palestine that, um, the two-state solution going forward, uh, in order to secure Israel and to secure Palestine, um, required, um, that recognition.

Yeah.

I mean, uh, as you said, it comes a year after Ottawa recognized the statehood of Palestine.

Canadian industry minister, Melanie Jolly, said the tariffs were built to apply political pressure on specific states, telling reporters, quote, we are also targeting products that can target specific states in the US.

It is November of 2020.
