We've got a bit of everything this time around for ModChat! Recompilations are picking up more steam thanks to ModernGekko paired with DolRecomp. The 3DS gets a low level emulator, and the PS5 gets…
So in the world of decompilers and recompilers, we have something a little new here, which is Modern Gecko.
They're stating and this is a post that I'm really just going to be reading from the Decomps subreddit.
It's from gate sufficient 3877 and they do state this is a new era for GameCube and Wii Recomps or recompiled builds of games.
Now they stay here just reading this.
Hello there.
It is my absolute pleasure to tell you about something huge we've been working on.
Modern Gecko.
A couple of weeks ago, we posted in this subreddit about our GameCube, we static recompiler called Dull Recomp.
At the time, it was CPU only, meaning you had to go through the incredibly tedious process of writing your own runtime from scratch just to see anything happen.
However, the CPU opcode implementation was pretty much solid, but now the actual unified runtime is here.
and even includes the graphics renderer built right into it.
With this new Modern Gecko runtime, we've designed a system that is so easy to set up that you can literally get a port running in just a couple of hours.
You will still need to write custom patches for the game yourself, adding widescreen support, fixing HUD positioning, or making other engine level tweaks.
But the brutal work of getting a baseline recomp to boot is completely done for you out of the box.
You just need dull recomp and Modern Gecko, and that's basically it.
The game logic runs incredibly well, and yes, even audio works.
They do state that they have some video showcase.
I'm not going to show them here at least, but there are some showcases showing that Kirby's Return to Dreamland as well as Super Smash Bros. Melee is working right now.
Although they do state for that one, Mac support is undergoing at the moment, so no audio on that one quite yet.
They also state that it's important to note that none of this would have been possible without the amazing lead developer Hyperway, who also worked on Dull Recomp and most of expansion pack.
The tool is officially in your hands now.
Keep in mind that the wiki and documentation are still a work in progress, and there are definitely still things to fix regarding inputs and raw optimizations.
But the repository is open for you to try out right now, and you can find the core project repositories over at GitHub for both Modern Gecko and Dull Recomp.
They also do state that no AI was used in the process of making Modern Gecko, so it's been made by humans for humans.
But do note that while most of the code is derived from Dolphin, no emulation is present in Modern Gecko besides some HLE stuff.
