New USDA numbers released this fall compare the cost of production for both U.S. and Brazilian farmers when it comes to corn and soybean production.
That report shows the total cost per acre to grow soybeans here in the United States between 2023 and 2025 came in at $656.16, with the U.S. heartland average growing costs about 6.5% more than our national average.
In Brazil, those costs were at $558.97, with a major growing region of Mato Grosso averaging 3.6% higher costs.
Total cost per acre to grow corn here in the U.S. heartland during that three-year period averaged $951.82. That's an acre with corn growing costs in Brazil.
Researchers noted that the numbers for Brazil reflect lower land costs, benefits from double cropping, and lower seed costs.
It's time for farmers to start paying attention to the agricultural risk coverage and price loss coverage programs.
Sign up for the 2026 crop is on now and will run through December 11th at County Farm Service Agency offices with sign up for the 2027 crop beginning on November 2nd and running through March 15th of 2027.
That sign-up will include inclusions of nearly 30 million additional base acres the program now allows for some growers.
But because the eligible acres for the program now exceed the nationwide 30 million acre cap, the government is applying an across-the-board, pro-rated reduction of 3.69% to all newly allocated acres.
