A local author is introducing young readers to a story about heritage, belonging, and discovery.
Kimberly Vaughn's new children's picture book, Kelty the Highland Coo: A Highland Heart in the Sierras, is now available on Amazon and is the third installment in her Guardians of the Grove series.
The book follows Kelty, a shaggy Highland cow living in the Yosemite Highlands with farmer Finn, as she begins to question why she looks different from other cattle and why her thick coat seems made for a place she has never seen.
The book will have its festival debut October seventeenth and eighteenth at the Yosemite Celtic Festival and Highland Games in Oakhurst, where families can experience Kelty's story during story time in the fairy village hosted by Miranda the Forest Fairy.
For local families and podcast listeners planning the weekend, the event gives them a chance to connect with a new Sierra Foothills children's story in person.
Sarah Solano Aguirre has joined the newspaper's news staff and will be covering major local beats, including the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors, the John C. Fremont Healthcare District, and Yosemite National Park, along with feature stories and other community coverage.
Little said the paper is thrilled to have her on staff, and editor Greg Little said she will bring a fresh perspective and help inform the public.
Solano Aguirre recently moved to Mariposa from Austin, Texas, where she graduated from the University of Texas with a focus on journalism and communications.
Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, she grew up in Medellín and also studied at the University of West Florida before transferring to Austin.
She said joining a newspaper feels like a dream come true after what she described as a difficult search for openings in the field.
