The Songs We Sing - week 4 | The Ultimate Name Drop

And to kind of set it up a little bit, I want to ask you this question.

Have you ever been near someone and they've name dropped a lot? You ever been near someone who's name dropped? I mean, you would never do it, but you've been around other people who've name dropped.

And sometimes you just want to pick the name up and give it back to them.

Do you know what I mean? Let me just see whether we've got some in the room.

So just turn to the person next to you.

What's the most famous name in your context? So just ask the person, anyone got any famous names in their contacts? Some of you are going to say Dan Murphy.

Not that famous, quite famous.

Okay, I don't know whether any of you got any, but listen, there's a little thing goes on in our culture, like name dropping, and we get this like celebrity proximity.

Have you heard about that? Celebrity proximity is when your second cousin's neighbour's daughter cut David Beckham's hair.

Do you know what I mean? And so you'll say something like that.

Or if you do know someone famous, you use their first name.

Like I was just chatting to Bear the other day.

You know, Bear Grylls.

I was just chatting to Bear.

Or if you've ever met someone famous, you wouldn't be as embarrassing as to take a selfie like I did.

with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the previous Archbishop of Canterbury.

And there's my friend Rachel photobombing the selfie of me with the previous Archbishop of Canterbury.

But when we name drop, what we do is we try to leverage the impact that that name has.

We borrow what we think is their status, their credibility.

We're using it to try and open doors for us because we think their name is going to do that for us.

It's going to open doors that we can't do on our own.
