Hundreds gathered at T-Wish Park in Albuquerque on Monday for the city's sixth annual Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, where former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Shiazi Peet was among the featured guests.
Pete, who is a 2021 Shiprock High School graduate, made history earlier this year as the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team when he joined the Cowboys.
He played six snaps in the preseason before being released and is now a free agent.
Pete told the crowd the day is about more than his own accomplishments, emphasizing the resilience of indigenous people and his desire to inspire native youth.
An estimated 800 people attended the celebration, which organizers said aims to build community and raise the visibility of Albuquerque's urban native population.
While President Joe Biden began issuing presidential proclamations recognizing the day in 2021, it is not a federal holiday.
