Episode 23, Return of the Justin Long... or Attack of the Cylons. Cue the scrolling yellow space text. Jess is upset for reasons Jay thinks she's hiding from herself. But Yoda, he knows things. And…
Okay.
Okay, so the episode is called Backslide, and backsliding is exactly what Nick is doing by being with Caroline.
who has toyed with and broken his heart countless times.
So much so, in fact, that past Nick left a DVD recording addressed to future Nick in case he ever decided to give Caroline another chance, warning him off of it, which Winston and Schmidt forced him to watch.
But present Nick ignores past Nick's warnings and decides to move in with Caroline.
He insists she's different and it was all about timing.
And after going through her own backslidey plot, Jess gives him an impassioned speech at the end of the episode about how they both deserve more and they don't need to settle and he's great and she'll be there for him to combat the sad, lonely voice in his head.
But he's like,
we signed a lease this morning.
So rewinding and continuing that theme of backsliding, at the beginning of the episode, Jess is grieving her relationship with Russell.
And in a moment of weakness, she calls up an ex for a booty call.
But not Russell.
who we eventually find out actually has a girlfriend, Jen, who happens to look very much like an Asian American Jess, and whom he's actually very much in love with and was about to propose to.
So Jess is really upset to learn that she was the other woman without realizing it.
So...
What a terrible engagement story that is.
Schmidt and Cece are in the very early stages of actually beginning a meaningful relationship, although they can do very little together because everything seems to turn Schmidt on, which is very painful for his broken penis.
But she takes him to visit her grandmother in a home, which works fine for him because he's grossed out by old people.
But he manages to get some life wisdom about lasting relationships from the old folks.
And when he and Sisti connect in a moment of emotional intimacy from it, he gets turned on by even that and passes out from the pain.
Winston, meanwhile, is living his best life, hanging out with his
boss, really connecting with him, and in a drunken outing with him, gets his ear pierced.
