At first glance, Judges just looks like an ancient battle over land, right? But much, much more is at stake.
Centuries earlier than this passage we've just heard read, God promised Abraham a people, a land, and a blessing that would ultimately reach all nations of the earth.
By the time we get to this passage in Judges, Israel's living in that land, but they've drifted away from God.
Chapter 4 opens with these very sobering words.
Far from Israel being a blessing to the nations,
the
nations are being a curse to Israel.
Now this is the pattern we see right through Judges.
Disobedience, oppression, distress and deliverance.
It is God.
His people may fail repeatedly but he remains faithful to his promises and he continues his plan to bless all nations.
as we zoom down into the details of this episode in chapter 4, we see God inviting ordinary people like you and like me to participate in what he is doing, to participate in his plan and join him in it.
Three striking truths emerge from this passage.
The first one, God may use people that we least expect and think least qualified.
Secondly, God invites us to participate, but he is the one who will bring the success.
And then the third thing we're going to see is when God invites people to participate, some respond... and others hold back and miss out.
Let's look at the first one.
God may use people that we least expect and might feel least qualified.
Judges 4.4 says, Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lepidoth, was leading Israel at that time.
Hang on.
That's a bit unexpected, isn't it? In that culture and that part of the world, a woman didn't serve as a prophet normally or lead the people normally.
