Welcome to another Heroic Roundtable! In this side quest from our main actual play campaign, we step behind the DM screen and dive deep into the guts and gears of TTRPG design, mechanics, and table…
Let's do it.
I think when we hear the word crunch, we automatically all think about...
Mm-hmm.
Crunch bars.
3.5.
What does that mean? Something Brandon
loves.
What's the weather outside? Let's roll it on a table.
Roll on a table.
Mm-hmm.
How do we do this? What's the mechanic in combat for grappling, trying to disarm someone while grappling, casting into a grapple? Crazy.
How do I attack five times in a round?
With all those, is crunch actually fun? Is that something that you enjoy, Brandon?
Yes.
Wow.
Caveat, if you enjoy spreadsheets, you will enjoy crunch.
Yeah.
Good call.
So what I like about a crunchy system is that...
there are rules that spell out all of the specific benefits of trying different scenarios or situations.
So all of the modifiers and having to go deep into the rules, I really enjoy that part of it because- Like, for example, in 5th edition or in 5.5 for D&D, it took a big chunk of that away, and it's just advantage or disadvantage, right? So the problem with that is, like, some advantages are bigger than other advantages.
