🚨 BREAKING: Giants Acquire J.J. McCarthy From the Vikings. Live Reaction

But let's talk a little bit about JJ McCarthy.

So like I said, Giants give up the fifth overall pick.

JJ McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in 2024.

So you're getting a former top 10 pick for a fifth round pick.

I mean, not too bad.

Big selling point here for JJ McCarthy.

He is only 23 years old.

So there is a lot of developmental upside here.

He's under contract through next season, and there is a fifth-year option for the 2028 season.

The Giants have the call on whether or not they want to pick that option up.

They won't because he's not their starting quarterback.

So he's under contract through this year and through next year as well.

So this is a backup quarterback that the Giants have under contract for the 2027 season, not just 2026.

But how did we get here with J.J. McCarthy? Number 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Lost the entirety of his rookie season due to a knee injury that he suffered in preseason.

Spent the whole year on injured reserve.

And obviously that was a roadblock for him, preventing him from developing properly.

And then in 2025, he had a week one offensive player of the week.

Comeback win versus the Chicago Bears in the second half.

And then he had a high ankle sprain, and he missed five games.

And then this year, he was benched.

And not only benched to second string, third string.

Yes, the Minnesota Vikings, they signed Kyler Murray this offseason.

They brought in Carson Wentz as his backup.

And J.J. McCarthy went from former top 10 pick, former hopeful franchise quarterback, to a third string reserve that wasn't even suiting up on game days, quite the fall from grace.
