In this bonus episode of The Inner Empire, I read my recent article, “The Uses of Manson,” originally published in Failed State Update…
In nineteen seventy-three, Timothy Leary found himself in the adjustment center at Folsom Prison with Charles Manson in a nearby cell.
Leary had been returned to the United States after more than two years on the run.
They spent most of the day locked in separate cells but could talk through the bars.
They discussed prison, LSD, brainwashing, and what had happened to the generation Leary encouraged to turn on, tune in, drop out.
Leary's account, written in federal prison, was titled The Neuropolitics of Courage.
This is a fictionalized philosophical dialogue using Manson to explore his ideas of evolution and consciousness.
That said, Leary, a PhD psychologist, was as qualified as anyone to diagnose Mansonism.
Leary had helped millions of young people free themselves from the old lies and then left them waiting to be told what to do.
He had shown them how to create a new head without telling them what the new head should contain.
People had to take responsibility for their own lives and decide for themselves what was real.
"I have America surrounded." Richard Nixon knew a political opportunity when he saw one.
