Every Nation City Bowl Mark Simpson Sermon Series : I Am God according to God Title : I AM who I AM Week 1 Congregation : Newlands 30 Aug 2026
So we are starting a really exciting series this morning, and our series is called I Am.
And it comes from a moment in the book of Exodus where God declares to Moses when he asks the question, who are you? God just says,
I
And to give you a bit of background as to why we want to do the series that focuses in on who God is, a couple of weeks back, I was sharing with some friends, I don't know if it was a connect group or somewhere, but anyway, we're talking and talking about life and talking about the stuff that we go through and the burdens that we carry and the things that bring turmoil to our hearts and stuff that makes us anxious.
And we've all got those, don't we? And as we were talking, I thought to myself, I wonder how different my life would be with the reality of what we go through and the stuff that makes us anxious, how different how different my life would be if I was utterly convinced that God was my father.
And how would I look at those things through that lens if I was utterly convinced that he was my father, he cared for me, that he was sovereign and he was in control.
And I thought, it wouldn't necessarily take away the stuff that we're going through, but I think it would change the posture of my heart.
Would you agree with
me? So I thought to myself, what I therefore need and what I think we need is how do we grow in faith? And, you know, last week I know Matt preached an amazing word about peace in the storm.
And there was this moment in the storm when the disciples are freaking out and Jesus is asleep with his head on a pillow in the midst of a storm.
And I think the whole point there was how could Jesus in the midst of a storm sleep when everyone else is falling apart? The point was simply this.
Make sense? So I'm thinking to myself, like, how do I live like that? And I think it comes down to growing in faith.
And the more you know him and who he is and believe that he is who he says he is, the easier it is to trust in God.
And the fruit of that is when storms come, I'm not concerned because my gaze is set not on the storm but on God.
