Are you tracking cybersecurity metrics that actually keep your business secure, or are you just reporting "the weather" to your executive board? In Episode 48 of the DTF Cyber Podcast, Damian Chung…
Jason BarnesGuestOtherwise, we'll be, we're gonna be all over the place, right? So let's first start with oper- operational security metrics, and that's right down Jason and, and, and my lane.
Okay.
So yeah, well, uh, operational speed and efficiency is, uh, we'll say the category that we're gonna touch on today f- for the first one.
So the first actual, um, metric, can you guess, Troy?
Mean time to detection.
Okay.
Mean time to remediation.
Okay, Troy's been cheating.
Troy's been cheating.
[laughs]
That's Jason's lesson, he's the first thing.
See? The first thing on my list is the first thing you thought of.
That's a sign we're going the right direction.
Uh, mean time to detect, right? Damian, why does this matter for most people? Or why should it matter?
Um, well look, we- we know that there are attackers out there, maybe even sitting in your systems, and they could be sitting dormant for a long time.
And so the longer they sit there, you are, you're just at risk.
So if you, we have to be able to detect these, uh, anomalies a lot quicker, and being able to show that we have really fast detection times helps us mediate that risk, or at least to understand how well we're doing within security operations.
Um, I, Jason, I don't know if you wanna talk about, you know, some of the, the war stories.
How long has been the longest incident or intrusion that has gone undetected? I mean, I've-
... seen a lot through my career.
Uh, I've heard stories-
... of like, yeah, months, maybe even years.
