By the mid-1980s, vampires had a problem.

For generations, they had haunted castles and stalked moonlit corridors, and embodied ancient fears of death and corruption.

But audiences were changing.

The Cold War was entering its final act, youth culture was becoming increasingly commercialized, and cinema was searching for new icons.

Tonight's specimen asked its viewers a provocative question.

What if immortality wasn't terrifying? What if it was actually pretty fucking cool? Because beneath the leather jackets, motorbikes, the rock soundtrack, and yes, the ridiculous mullets, lies something more interesting.

Vampires have always reflected the anxieties of their age.

In Victorian fiction, they embodied fears of aristocratic decadence.

In the starchy post-war 50s, they became symbols of repression and forbidden desire.

But in the 1980s, they underwent a remarkable transformation.

They became young, beautiful, and rebellious.

Less monsters and fantasies.

And so we arrive in a California dreamscape of boardwalk lights, comic book and video rental stores, and endless summer nights.

A place that feels less like reality than a collective memory of adolescence itself.

Here, growing up and becoming a vampire are presented as eerily similar experiences.

Both involve surrendering innocence, choosing allegiances, and discovering who you really are.

With a runtime of 97 minutes, the reel on the cold marble slab tonight reinvented the vampire for a new generation and brought two young actors called Corey together for the first time.
