That is a genuinely hard stretch of identity and adjustment and a drink at the end of a day like that didn't feel like a treat.

felt like the only thing helping me cope and survive with a version of motherhood I felt ashamed of not loving enough and I don't think that's just me yeah I know it's not just me about one in four of us in the UK experience a mental health problem in any given year and it is extremely common almost unremarkable really for alcohol to be the thing quietly drafted in to manage that I've called it on this show before the nation's favorite coping mechanism because that's genuinely what it has become.

Not a niche habit, but a cultural default, which brings it back to the pyramid, this pyramid of belief, same as always.

If everyone around you treats a drink as the reasonable response to a hard day, a hard year, a hard identity shift, then of course the belief forms that this is simply what coping looks like.

And drinking specifically to cope rather than drinking socially or drinking for pleasure is one of the strongest known predictors of a drinking problem developing down the line.

That's not me being dramatic, by the way.

That's just what the research consistently shows.
