Psalm 145

There are 66 books in all of the Bible.

27 New Testament, 39 in the Old Testament.

65 of those 66 books are God talking to us, whether it's narrative, whether it's about the future, whether it's wisdom literature or might be a teaching passage.

It's God telling us stuff that we need to know.

One book is different.

It's the book of Psalms.

Psalms is the one book of the Bible where the posture of the whole book, where it's coming from, is us, human beings, talking to God.

It's us talking to Him.

The Bible gives us words almost to put to any particular time of how we might be feeling.

Psalms is unique in this.

It became, the book of Psalms became the Jewish hymnal effectively.

These were the songs, they put music to it and these were the songs that they would sing sometimes on their way to Jerusalem, sometimes in the privacy of their own house, sometimes when they would gather together.

These are the songs that they would sing together.

The 150 Psalms are grouped into sections.

There's five of these sections.

The Jewish editors from years and years and years ago decided on these sections.

Your Bible might say a book, book one, book two, whatever.

Psalm 145 sits in the fifth section, the final section, book five.

And this section has an overall theme to it.

All the sections have a particular theme, but book number five, section five, has the theme of praise, or more specifically, eternal praise.

As well as these five sections of the Psalms, there are also different types of Psalms.

You might know this if you've spent any time in your Bible.

Sometimes, yes, there'll be a Psalm of praise, like the one that we're looking at today.

There can be Psalms of joy, but there can be Psalms of despair.

Psalms of petition, that we just ask God for stuff.
