First up is Leopold Stokowski, who made his CSO debut in 1958 and who became a frequent visitor over the following decade.

The relationship culminated in a 1968 recording of two Slavic blockbusters, Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture and Kachaturian's Third Symphony.

The Kachaturian Third is billed in the original liner notes as a grand, colossal sound symphony.

It features a blaze of 15 extra trumpets, twice the usual complement of woodwinds and an organ.

Kachaturian was aiming big in order to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

The work was premiered on Christmas Day, 1947, but it failed to please the fickle Soviet authorities.

Seven weeks later, Kachaturian was denounced, along with Shostakovich, and accused of, quote, decadent formalism.

Fortunately, Chicago is a city where it isn't hard to find 15 excellent trumpeters, and together they make a splash at the symphony's opening and close.

Also listen for the sultry middle section in which the strings seem to anticipate the love theme from Cacciaturian's Spartacus Ballet.

Recorded in 1968 for RCA, Leopold Stokowski conducts the Symphony No. 3 in C major by Aram Kachaturian.
