Judith CrownGuestRush University System for Health and suburban giant Endeavor Health have announced plans to merge, a deal that will create the region's largest healthcare system by number of facilities.
While the system will keep the nearly 190-year-old Rush name, Endeavor's suburban site will adopt it too, for example, becoming Rush-Evanston Hospital.
As part of the move, Endeavor will transition its primary academic relationship away from the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine to align directly with Rush.
Leaders from both nonprofits describe the deal as a merger of equals with no money changing hands.
Endeavor CEO Gerard J.P. Gallagher will serve as president and CEO of the unified system, while Rush CEO Dr. Omar Lateef will step into a strategic advisor role following the close.
A cornerstone of the deal is a $1 billion commitment from Endeavor's endowment.
Half a billion dollars will back academic medicine, clinical trials, and research in areas like cancer and neuroscience.
$300 million is set aside for community health initiatives aiming to bridge the life expectancy gap between underserved and affluent neighborhoods.
$200 million will go directly toward clinical operations and patient care across the region.
