I've been enjoying listening to your show and your latest album, and I wanted to share my friendship story with you.

Most of the students already knew each other, and several people told me not to be friends with her because she was weird, and she put weird in quotations.

But I had been called weird at my previous school, and I remembered how much it meant when someone chose to be my friend anyway.

Lane and I became friends and went through middle school and high school together.

By our senior year, we co-managed the baseball team and called ourselves L squared.

We stayed connected through college and adulthood, meeting up during breaks and catching up on the phone.

Four years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer while living in Chicago and moved back home for treatment.

Lane's sister had also battled cancer so she understood in a way few people could.
