So what the hell is happening in Africa right now, and why does it matter to America and Europe? Nowhere is this fight more obvious than on two tiny islands in Lake Chad, where on May 14th, Green Berets and SEAL Team Six were firing thousands of rounds at ISIS militants.
Their mission was supposed to be a quick midnight raid in the darkest hours of the night.
Their objective was a snatch and grab operation aimed at capturing the top ISIS leader in Africa.
But somehow, the government-sponsored kidnapping mission had gone horribly wrong, and it was about to turn into a major international disaster if the team couldn't quickly turn things around.
They're facing off against nearly 40 ISIS fighters, who would gladly die instead of allowing their leader to be captured.
But the American commando team can't advance through the storm of enemy bullets, and the battle's been raging for over three hours at that point, and they're running low on ammunition.
Just when it looks like things couldn't get any worse, though, suddenly the ISIS compound erupts into a giant fireball of an explosion.
An AC-130 gunship arrives on scene, ending the fight in a barrage of 30-millimeter high explosive shells.
It's the military equivalent of, "If I can't have you, no one can." 105-millimeter shell demolishes the compound's main building, eliminating the ISIS leader in a high-temperature fireball.
The United States and Nigeria say they've killed a top leader in the Islamic State militant group.
Abu Bilal al-Miniki was reportedly killed in a joint mission near Nigeria.
