As we saw last week, the disciples were sent out two by two, and they were given Jesus' authority to cast out demons, heal the sick, and expound the Scriptures.

And as you would expect, as they come back to Jesus, they're excited to report what they had seen, what they had been able to accomplish, what they had taught.

There are so many people around, they haven't even got time to stop to eat, to recoup their batteries.

Jesus knowing they need rest because in truth there are times when pastoral ministry is hard it's mentally physically emotionally and yes spiritually draining at times and there is need to rest to spend some time away from the crowd to be with the Lord to slow down, to pray.

This is a time in Jesus's earthly ministry where his popularity among the people is skyrocketing.

They see Jesus and his disciples leaving and there becomes kind of a conga line of people racing around the shore, keeping their eye on the boat.

And we kind of get this picture that as they go along, more and more people are added.

So by the time they reach this supposed quiet place, remote place, it's kind of like a frenzy of people there when they arrive.

as they approach and some people would have the potential to say hey let's just we won't go ashore let's let's go somewhere else but Jesus sees them and he puts aside the need for rest and he ministers to them because as he looks out upon that crowd he sees them a sheep without a shepherd and he goes on and provides as only the great shepherd could But he doesn't just see our need in a general sense.

But when he later sees the disciples struggling in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, he sees their individual needs.

He sees those who are ready to give up, who might perhaps feel abandoned, exhausted.
