For example, in many present day encounters, people will reference the artwork of Brian Froud when describing what they see.
If we assume that a fairy's appearance is shaped by personal references and subconscious expectations, what would the fairy that you and me encounter look like?

This is a, a lovely question from our friend Anastasia Robinson, is someone who, in my experiences, has unparalleled knowledge of the fairy senses.
So first thing to say is my fairy would not have wings My fairy would not have twigs or mushrooms growing out of it as the-

... perhaps more modern theosophic fairies do.
And I think my fairy would be of normal size, and I think my fairy would probably be female.
This spring, writing a book about fairies, I found myself falling in love with many Scottish accounts, and there was one that I particularly like that I think comes close to my dream fairy.
A man was walking on the hill by Loch Fyne, and he got to the fairy rock, and at this point, suddenly a cascade of stairs opened before him.
And he looked down, and he saw a beautiful fairy woman coming up the steps towards him, and beyond her, a wild Highland dance.
And she held out her hand as if to say, "Come with me.
Come into the darkness."
Mm.
And of course he, who was out walking his dog, saw that this was perhaps not a sensible thing to do-
[laughs]
... and walked back down to his wife and family.
I am ashamed to say that possibly I would have walked down those stairs.
[laughs]
Chris, what about you? What would your idealized fairy be like?
Well, when I was a kid, probably something in medieval clothing.
But now it would be not really that visual.
