What do creative people really do before their work begins? Jo Hutton, author of best-selling Substack Yoga for Tired People, sits down with the movers and shakers of the creative industry to find…
Toni JonesGuestJo HuttonHostDo you find that your work has how you set up your work has shifted from when you were in that more traditional environment to now? How has your morning shifted? It

I'm so happy to be talking to you about this because mornings are my favorite thing to talk about.

And they're also my favorite things to do now, which is like people will be just if they're listening to this podcast, I feel like.

they probably quite like mornings already and might want to do them a bit differently or a bit better.

And so when I was working as a journalist, I was generally working very hard and then going out very hard and then getting up the next day to work very hard and wondering why I didn't feel great.

So it's literally just over 10 years since I started really paying attention to that, I suppose.

So instead of what would most people do and what would I do now if I need to be at my work desk for 7 a.m., I would probably make sure I had I went to bed at 9pm, right? So instead I was going to bed at like midnight one, two, being out on the beers.

And so waking up to a horrible alarm, already running late, already feeling terrible, probably hungover, and then rushing on the tube to a hectic job.

So just everything Now that I'm learning a bit more about nervous system, which we'll probably talk about, appreciating that I'm putting myself in exactly the worst position to have a good day, really, and a good life.

But my morning's now, and I probably should caveat this, I don't have kids, and I do work for myself, so I don't live by myself, I live with my husband and my dog.

when I talk about my mornings now like I have a morning routine which I try and stick to during the week pretty religiously and I appreciate any of my friends with children and like that's not necessarily realistic for lots of people but I feel like there's different things that we can all do to our mornings depending on what you want from them right so yeah my mornings now it's they're just very self-directed so Which is good and bad because it's like the deadline to do my work is me.

So what time do I want to sit down at my desk? What time do I want to organize podcasts? What time do I want to start creating? So I kind of work backwards from that.
