Moeen Ali & Adil Rashid React To Ben Stokes Shock Retirement

Mo, I'll start with you because obviously both of you guys have spent loads of time with him.

Um, but you were actually playing, weren't you? So who...

How did you get that news?

We came off after 20 overs of fielding and, um, actually Mickey Arthur, who's the coach of Durham, uh, sorry, Derby, uh, he's like, "Mate, Stokes has just retired." And I was like, "What?" And he said, "Fully retired from international cricket." And then, yeah, everyone was a bit shocked.

But, um, yeah, it's been a crazy, crazy afternoon I think at, at the test match.

And Rash, you got the news on WhatsApp, didn't you? When, uh, producer Squib messaged in the group, 'cause I was also out, and the text literally read, "Boys, Stokes has retired." I went, "What?" And then I seen Rash's reply.

What was my reply?

I think it was, "Eh?" [laughs]

Yeah, I was, uh, yeah, so I didn't know until when he messaged.

Then, then I switched, uh, TV on, I started watching it.

That's when it came up.

So yeah, I wasn't expecting that actually during the test.

It was a bit, a bit of a random one, so yeah.

Um, Mo, you know when you get the news, obviously, uh, Bear, Stokes, I think, played today in your game.

I'm pretty sure he opened.

And you two have both spent time together with Stokes.

What ha- did you guys have a chat or was it just like, "Okay, we're gonna have to chat right after-"

Yeah

... 'cause we-

No, no, I spoke to him, um, 'cause obviously he was getting ready as well.

But he, he wasn't actually that surprised by it.

Um, yeah, but Johnny was, Johnny was absolutely, like, normal.

He's like, "I'm not too surprised, to be honest with you." I was just surprised at the timing and obviously, uh, because somebody mentioned that he, he announced it, or they announced it, and he got a wicket first ball.

Um-

Yeah
