Mike Jordan LaskeyHostIt seems like someone who you have spent a lot of your career as an academic studying, but not just in an academic way.
Well, growing up, we always had seven-story mountain on the bookshelf in my parents' house.
And then when I was in college, it was a time right after the Second Vatican Council.
And I stayed around for one Easter break there because they were doing a retreat, which I think the retreat was actually just so they would have some altar boys around to take care of the triduum events.
But anyway, it was this retreat, and I decided to read Merton's autobiography, Seven-Story Mountain, during the retreat, and got some paperback out of the bookstore or something like that.
This was right after the council, uh, seven story mountain obviously was pre-conciliar in a number of ways.
Uh, and of course it was pre-conciliar, but it was a lot of other things, which I didn't kind of realize at the time, uh, being a callow youth and, uh, wanting everything to be up to date.
But then a couple of years later, um, Actually, right before he died, I happened to be in the office of one of my professors, and he had a paperback copy of Merton's newest book, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander.
And I just pulled it off the shelf, and I was sort of leafing through it while reading.
all the other people that were hanging around were having a conversation or something.
And I think the, Conjectures is a book that is made up of a lot of his journal entries, but there's sort of, reprocessed and added to and sort of put in thematic form and stuff like that.
