Marc MiddletonGuestNicole DawsonHostIn healthcare- We are just doing a disservice, you know? But before we get too far into that, I want to get your opinion, this big picture about what you think, what are we getting wrong about aging?

Well, I mean, uh, the big, the big piece is the, the, you know, really where I plant my flag, if you will, Nikki, is, has to do with mindset.

Uh, a- and I like to say that Growing Bolder was onto this 20 years before the research was.

You can make every right decision and action in your life a- and still end up with, you know, a, a nasty diagnoses.

Uh, but we decided we would look at aging through a, a, a lens of opportunity and possibility, and not simply loss and limitation, and that mindset was really the key to extracting the most joy out of your life.

And, and lo and behold, um, you know, Becca Levy, uh, who is, uh, Yale University, one of the world's foremost experts on social gerontology-

Uh, the report came out, as they always do, uh, indicated that aging is about decline.

And she looked at the data and, and she said, and, and rightly so, that whenever you put together a large group of older adults and do a study on them, on average the results are going to show decline.

Uh, however, uh, there are some people who decline more than average, and there are some people, a surprisingly large number of people, in this study 42% of people in this study over the 12-year period actually improved cognitively and physically as they got older.

What's responsible for these people?" This large number of people who actually got better over a 12-year period.

And the average age of the people in this study was 74 years old when it began, so they're in their 70s and 80s.
