A serious conversation should be had about the risks of AI, but it should stay a lot more grounded than it is. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get…
I want to be a little careful here.
To offer a layman's opinion on whether we should be worried about superintelligence to someone who was could be viewed in the same light as me sharing a counter-argument with my proctologist about whether I should be worried about my butt.
There's a bit of an expertise gap, is my point.
But sorry, I'm finding this Terminator fear-posting a little tiresome.
For a whole host of reasons that don't actually require much knowledge of AI to contend with, the notion that a super intelligent AI could, in Coxon's words, kill us all, is alarmist nonsense.
Now in a sure sign that pigs are flying and they're ice skating in hell, I am going to approvingly share a post by Taylor Lorenz for the second time this month.
She says, this sort of sanctimonious doomer posting is so infuriating.
You are fomenting terror among the public about a new technology which will be directly channeled into passing the worst laws imaginable.
And yeah, what Taylor said.
If you want a deeper dive into the financial and partisan incentives fueling this kind of Skynet baiting, have a look in my written piece where you can find another thread by Parker Thayer, which goes into great detail about who is actually funding the people who want to regulate our use of AI and regulate frontier companies.
