Darryl and Kadeem rewatch the second episode of A Different World, originally aired on October 1st, 1987, titled "Pilot". This episode is the second pilot produced for the show after the original pilot was filmed and scrapped. Jaleesa and Denise get a new roommate, talkative transfer student Maggie Lauten. Denise learns that the check for her dorm fees has bounced. To make matters worse, she had also covered Jaleesa's fees to repay her for an earlier favor. Denise and Jaleesa face eviction unless they can come up with 200 dollars by the next day. Denise cannot bring herself to ask her parents for help, as she is tired of being bailed out. When the dean of students realizes that Denise sincerely wants to take responsibility for her actions, he helps her get a cafeteria job with an advance on her salary. Jaleesa takes delight in the fact that she is now Denise's boss. *Guest star*: Bill Cosby and Keshia Knight Pulliam See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Reconstructing the Pilot4:58 – 15:16

Darryl M. BellHost

4:58

So let's start talking about, because there's so much to unpack from the pilot, which was...

Darryl M. BellHost

5:09

Even though the pilot for A Different World was not the first episode that aired.

Darryl M. BellHost

5:15

Right.

Kadeem HardisonHost

5:15

Correct.

Darryl M. BellHost

5:16

The pilot was the second episode.

Darryl M. BellHost

5:19

Yep.

Darryl M. BellHost

5:19

Even though it was the first one shot, and you say that, why?

Kadeem HardisonHost

5:22

And I say, we weren't in it.

Kadeem HardisonHost

5:25

They had shot the pilot and two other episodes before Jasmine and myself were cast.

Darryl M. BellHost

5:32

Yes.

Kadeem HardisonHost

5:33

So what they did was they shot a little... a pickup, a couple of pickup scenes with Jasmine and I interacting with Lisa Lilacoy, Denise's character, and edited those into the original pilot that they shot, which was crazy because then the pilot became number two.

Kadeem HardisonHost

5:57

Marissa's character didn't show up in the first episode.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:00

Which is weird because she was in the pilot.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:02

Right.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:03

Why she wasn't in the second episode?

Kadeem HardisonHost

6:06

I think that was,

Darryl M. BellHost

6:07

I don't know.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:07

I don't know.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:08

Because in the pilot, she moves in as a roommate.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:10

Right.

Darryl M. BellHost

6:10

But in the first episode, is Whitley going to be roommates with

Kadeem HardisonHost

6:16

Jaleesa? Is Denise going to be?

Darryl M. BellHost

6:20

Denise is going to be roommates

Kadeem HardisonHost

6:21

Kadeem HardisonHost

6:22

Jaleesa or Whitley.
