Breaking down the 2026 Mass. ballot questions ahead of the Nov. election

Moving on from just the questions themselves, Evan, I'm just curious, when you look out at this and you see nine questions on the ballot, there are those out there who say that that shows that this process has just gotten completely out of hand.

I mean, I opened up my ballot, as you heard off the top.

I got two sheets I got to get through.

This is too much for voters to try and digest.

What do you make of that argument that comes from people?

Oh, I'm one of those.

And maybe it's because it's sort of my job to learn about every ballot question, every cycle.

We've done this for four cycles now.

And I don't want us to become California, where we have 30, 40 ballot questions.

It is the wrong way to be making laws.

It's too much to ask voters to do.

Now, my job this time of year is not really to fight for that.

It's to say, well, this is our situation.

Voters need to know.

Let's help them know.

Like, this year, we have an app at myballot.tus.edu. You can go and, you know, prep an understanding of all the ballot questions.

So, that's what we're doing right now.

But in the big picture, long term, yeah, we can't continue to go down this path.

We need to improve the sort of regular order of passing laws.

Yeah.

Well, and maybe that's it.

You're putting the onus on the legislature to get their act together, it sounds like.

But is there other ways to improve our process? Do you have any suggestions?

So most of this process is enshrined in the state constitution.

So it's very hard to change.
