Nick van CuylenburgHostQueen Kong was born as Thomas Vanua on the 9th of August 1992, a Pasifika New Zealander of Samoan and Tongan descent.

So I was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, and specifically South Auckland in Mangere.
Queen describes her childhood community as having had strong cultural bonds, but also as being socially disadvantaged, with significant crime, poverty, and fewer opportunities and services available than to those living in more affluent areas.

Lots of gangs around, not really much space for any kind of feminine male energy.
Despite this difficulty, Queen was somewhat protected by the powerful women in her life.

I think my mum taught me how to persevere because there was a lot of things that we went through that were just very difficult.

She was so warm, but I think the warmth was preparing us for a world that was going to potentially be very difficult for us.
Her relationship with her father was far more complicated as she endured ongoing physical and emotional abuse, a relationship that has taken Queen many years to process.

We didn't have the greatest relationship growing up and I think everything that he kind of wanted for himself was kind of projected on me, you know, and I think we had lots of friction because we're very similar in nature, yeah, and I think I really understand that now as an adult more than I did when I was a child.
Queen also struggled with her religious upbringing in the Jehovah's Witness Church, a place in which she never felt fully accepted or understood, and which seemed completely out of touch with the challenges facing her community.

There were those annoying motherfuckers that would come knocking on your door at 9 in the morning on Saturday, you know, to talk about Jesus Christ.

And I don't know, the Jehovah's Witness Church was just like a, I say cult, which is very harsh, but, you know, the only things we could really celebrate were weddings.

I think a lot of my unpacking as an adult has been giving my inner child permission to have fun, which has been, was very difficult because childhood, there wasn't many situations that I can think of that were fun.
