In this episode of the Wine and Gold Talk podcast, host Ethan Sands and beat reporter Chris Fedor recap the first day of the Cavs' training camp. The discussion focuses heavily on head coach Kenny…
I think the thing that stands out to me, and Kenny Atkinson talked about this on a media call, you know, a coach has to be adaptable and you have to look at the personnel that you have and determine, OK, what is going to be best for us based on all of the different guys that we have? And I think when you go back to the Cavs acquiring James Harden in February, I know fans were frustrated by the fact that they kept adding different ISOs and they saw a signs of old James Harden the James Harden that can be really really maddening just like he can be magnificent it's blending the skill sets of the most important players that you have into everything that you do and the truth is if you're going to have James Harden on the roster you're gonna have isos It's going to happen.
So, yeah, it can be frustrating if that becomes the entire offense or if that becomes the entire final five minutes of a basketball game.
But it's going to happen and it's going to be part of what the Cavs do offensively.
If you have James Harden, you're just not going to play at the fastest pace in the NBA.
You might be able to create an identity of when James Harden's off the floor, then all of a sudden you can play faster.
It's more Peyton Watson get the rebound, push in transition, see if we can steal easy baskets that kind of way.
And I think it's the same thing when it comes to the defensive end of the floor.
Now, this all has to manifest itself and this all has to be worked through because we just don't know what this team is going to be defensively.
The way that that the Cavs could could put that much size on the perimeter with Dean Wade combined with Evan Mobley and maybe combined with Jared Allen at various points, it just allowed them to do different things.
So now the question is, all right, what is it that Peyton Watson does? We know what Dean Wade did best from a defensive standpoint.
What is it that Peyton Watson does best from a defensive standpoint? What is it that Mario Hazonia does best from a defensive standpoint? And you look at some of these new people that are on this roster and you say, OK, how can I blend their skill set with our principles? And Kenny's big on that, Ethan.
