CHLOE BROWN says Torontonians should treat their tax dollars like shares in the city and show up like owners: at elections, community consultations and their councillor’s office.
Chloe Brown is a policy analyst who started at Toronto City Hall in 2012 as an unpaid intern while working nights as a security guard. She has run for mayor of Toronto twice and was running for city council in Etobicoke when this episode was recorded.
She shares:
◼ How she says applying for apartments at 22 showed her what politics means for everyday life
◼ What she says growing up in Rexdale taught her, and her mother’s line: “I don’t pay taxes for you to tell my daughter what she cannot do.”
◼ What she says small businesses and working-class neighbourhoods like Etobicoke are up against
◼ What she says holding politicians accountable looks like: donations, showing up in person, and being “a nuisance to power”
◼ Why she says online engagement is not enough, and what she says seniors do better
◼ Why she says “affordable” needs an answer in numbers: “Tell me that in numbers.”
