As Maria Del Valle is on her way home from working at the Brooklyn Hospital, she kicks off the Mother's Day weekend by stopping to buy some flowers for her mom.
The Brooklyn apartment where Ana raised her children was now a multi-generational family home, shared by Ana, Maria, and her twin brother Luis.
The twins were now in their 40s, but by all accounts, Ana loved having them all together.
So, with flowers in hand, Maria made her way up to their family's apartment, 5C, just as she'd done countless times before in her life.
But when she got to their unit, she immediately realized that the door was unlocked.
This was odd to her because she, Luis, and their mother were meticulous about locking the door.
Her mother, Ana, was lying on the floor of their apartment, surrounded by blood.
During an interview with the Unsolved Mysteries podcast, Maria said that she initially thought her mom had fallen and hit her head, so she grabbed her mom to try to help, and that's when she realized that her arms were bound with an electrical cord.
She describes her disbelief as she tried to resuscitate her mom, thinking to herself that surely everything's going to be okay.
Ana had a gunshot wound on the side of her head and in the middle of her forehead.
She later told ABC7 New York, "...I can never erase it, that horrific image of my mom.
I try to imagine what she went through lying there, the whole day lying there, and I had to come and find her that way.
It was so brutal." The NYPD was on the scene within minutes, and immediately removed Maria from the scene.
