Send us Fan Mail This time we can confirm the players who have been retained and signed by the Vipers for Season 5 of the league. The organisers…
Tom MoodyGuest[upbeat music] In retaining Dan Lawrence, Andries House, and Shimron Hetmyer, as well as signing Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Tom Moody and his colleagues in the Desert Vipers hierarchy had to make some tough choices thanks to league regulations relating to season five.
Those regulations state that a side can retain or direct sign a maximum of four players only, and each final squad must be made up of between 21 and 23 players.
The squad must comprise a minimum of 11 players from ICC full members, including four from Afghanistan and one from Ireland.
There must also be four players from the UAE, including at least one capped player and one under the age of 23, one player from each of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, one further associate player, and the teams are also allowed to bring in a wildcard player outside of these numbers.
Additionally, each playing 11 must feature two UAE players, two Afghanistan players, and one associate player.
No UAE players were allowed to be retained or direct signed ahead of the auction in October, but franchises will have the right to match a bid on a player who was theirs in either season four of the DP World ILT20 or this September's development tournament.
It means plenty of thinking had to go into the decisions on who to retain, given only a few spots were available for those positions, and coming up Tom explains the Vipers thinking in keeping hold of Dan, Andries, and Shimron, as well as why some of the other major names in the Vipers squad from last season didn't feature in that select group.
In our chat, Tom also touches on his view of the decision of the league not to allow any UAE player retentions.
He talks about the prospect of mining Pakistan again for talent, as the franchise has done so successfully in the past, the side's performance in the Global Super League, and the possibility of becoming the first team to retain the DP World ILT20 crown.
As ever with Tom, it's a terrific chat full of well-considered thoughts, and it's up now here on Vipers Voices.
